The 2025 ASTA River Cruise Expo in Vienna was an immersive experience, bringing together 16 river cruise ships from 9 different cruise lines for an unparalleled look at the world of river cruising. Designed for travel professionals, this event featured exclusive ship tours, in-depth educational sessions, and networking opportunities, all set against the breathtaking backdrop of Vienna. From exploring the latest innovations in river cruising to connecting with industry leaders, the expo provided valuable insights into what’s next for this unique style of travel.
During my time at the 2025 ASTA River Cruise Expo, I stayed aboard the Viking Rinda, one of Viking’s signature longships. My accommodations were in a standard water-level cabin, which I found to be perfectly comfortable. While these cabins don’t offer balconies, they provide a cozy and efficient space—ideal for resting after a full day of ship tours and events.
Viking’s longships are thoughtfully designed, with the main deck featuring both veranda and French balcony staterooms, while the upper deck offers additional veranda staterooms and the more spacious veranda suites. My personal favorite, however, was the explorer suite (pictured), which boasts a wraparound balcony—an amazing option for those wanting extra space and panoramic river views.
Dining aboard the Rinda was a pleasant experience, with my first evening spent in the main dining hall. However, I quickly discovered my preferred dining spot on a Viking longship—the Aquavit Terrace. While aboard the Viking Ingvi on my final night, I dined on the terrace outside the lounge on the upper deck. Although March weather in Vienna can be unpredictable, Viking had enclosed the space, making it comfortable despite the chilly temperatures. This feature is especially valuable for those cruising in the shoulder season when temperatures can fluctuate.
The upper deck is also home to the ship’s lounge and bar, where friendly crew members were eager to craft cocktails, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. This space also serves as the venue for evening entertainment, making it a social hub on board.
Viking’s fleet is impressive, with 82 river ships currently in service and 26 more on order. The cruise line also operates 10 ocean ships, with 9 more on the way, as well as two expedition ships. With the largest river cruise fleet in the world, Viking continues to expand its presence and offer travelers an exceptional way to explore Europe’s rivers.
With only a morning to explore Vienna, I made the most of my time, starting with an Uber ride straight to the Spanish Riding School. Vienna’s Ubers are easy to use, though traffic can make even short distances take longer than expected. Still, this was a great first stop. Thanks to my Vienna City Card, I was able to get standing-room entry for the morning practice session (10-11 AM), but since it was a slow day—likely due to the cold and rainy weather—the attendant kindly gave me a seat. The featured photo is from the arena before practice began, as I was disappointed to learn that no photography is allowed once the session is in progress. Watching the famous Lipizzaner stallions train was an incredible experience, and if time allows, I’d definitely recommend adding a stable tour to your visit for a behind-the-scenes look at these magnificent horses.
From there, I walked past the St. Stephen’s Cathedral, one of Vienna’s most iconic landmarks. This massive and impressive Gothic structure also hosts classical concerts, though I didn’t go inside on this visit I will on my next visit. One place I did explore was Mozart’s Apartment, just a short walk away. Thanks to the Vienna City Card, I was able to enter without an extra fee, and there was no line at all. The apartment itself was surprisingly large for its time—Mozart lived here with his family and servants—but still felt personal and interesting to explore.
Next, I got to experience Vienna’s U-Bahn, and I can confirm—it really is as easy as people say. I purchased a ticket for 2.40 euros, inserted it at the station, and was on my way. The trains run every few minutes, so there’s no stress if you miss one. Just be ready because the doors close fast! The stations are well-marked, and each stop is clearly announced, along with which side of the train to exit from.
I ended my morning at the Danube Tower, which I imagine is a fantastic visit on a clear day. The tower is a bit of a walk from the U-Bahn station, but the path leads through a beautiful park, making for a pleasant stroll. Alternatively, an Uber would be a quicker option. Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t in my favor, and visibility was limited. Still, the tower offers a unique experience with a small slide at the top and a revolving café that provides 360-degree views of the city. Service at the café wasn’t great, but it’s still a fun spot to check out—especially since it’s included in the Vienna City Card.
Overall, my quick tour of Vienna gave me just a small taste of what the city has to offer, and I’d love to return with more time (and better weather!) to explore even further.
The Spanish Riding School in Vienna has been training and showcasing the world-famous Lipizzaner stallions for over 450 years, making it the oldest classical dressage institution in the world!
Riverside, a newer player in the river cruise market, was founded in 2022 and currently operates three river ships cruising Europe. What sets Riverside apart is its commitment to modern luxury and its elegant approach to river cruising. Riverside ships were formerly Crystal ships, which were purchased following Crystal’s closure and extensively refurbished to offer a fresh and upscale experience. I was particularly impressed by the Riverside Mozart, which features an array of suites that, while compact, exude luxury. The Harmony, Symphony, and Riverside suites are ideal for those seeking comfort without excess space. However, if you’re looking for more room, the Penthouse Suite is a great option with significantly more space and a higher level of comfort. The Mozart Suite and Owner Suite are an entirely different experience—immensely spacious, luxurious, and nearly overwhelming in their grandeur. These suites are perfect for those on longer cruises who are looking for top-tier accommodations, and if they fit within your budget, they will certainly exceed expectations.
Beyond the suites, Riverside Mozart’s spa is worth mentioning. It’s much more extensive than what’s typically found on river cruise ships, featuring Finnish saunas, steam rooms, a Jacuzzi, multiple massage rooms, and a pool with a counter-current system for those looking to swim laps. There’s also one of the larger gyms I encountered during my trip, providing ample space for fitness enthusiasts to enjoy a workout while cruising. If you enjoy a refined, modern, and luxurious river cruise experience, Riverside offers an exceptional product that balances comfort, elegance, and amenities.
Scenic Group, which operates Scenic and Emerald river ships and a line of ocean cruising yachts, brought two vessels to port for tours during the event. I had the chance to tour the Emerald Luna, one of the Scenic Group's Star-Ships, and I was impressed by the range of accommodations offered. Scenic Group’s ships feature a variety of suites, including the Owner’s One-bedroom suites, which I highly recommend if you can book one. These suites offer luxurious spaces that elevate the cruise experience, as well as a selection of grand balcony suites, panorama balcony suites, and water-level staterooms. Emerald ships also stand out with their aft daytime pool, which remains heated throughout the cruise and features a retractable roof for less-than-ideal weather. In the evenings, this space transforms into a lounge and cinema, providing an extra touch of versatility and comfort. Whether you’re enjoying a drink by the pool or watching a film under the stars, Scenic Group’s ships offer a truly unique river cruising experience that combines elegance with innovative amenities.
Tauck is known for providing a seamless, all-inclusive experience, with a focus on luxury and personalized service. While I didn’t have time to tour the staterooms, I did experience their impeccable service and quality dining during a young professional’s gathering. The event featured an oyster bar with a chef serving up oysters topped with generous amounts of caviar, paired with an endless supply of champagne. The attention to detail in service was evident, creating an atmosphere that feels both luxurious and intimate. Tauck's ability to provide exclusive cultural experiences truly elevates the journey, making it an excellent choice for those seeking a more immersive, personalized river cruise experience. The ships are understated in terms of glitz but shine with their focus on enriching, curated experiences that make every moment count.
Uniworld offers an elegant, luxury experience with a strong emphasis on all-inclusive offerings and beautiful, distinctive decor. However, their ornate style may appeal more to those who enjoy classic, high-end, European designs, and could feel more traditional for younger travelers. With a more mature clientele, Uniworld’s cruises offer an atmosphere of refined comfort and understated luxury. The staterooms, though on the smaller side, are beautifully appointed with rich details and high-end finishes. Though the decor may not be everyone’s taste, Uniworld’s commitment to personalized service, luxury amenities, and immersive experiences means they provide a welcoming atmosphere for those looking for a traditional and all-encompassing river cruise.
Riviera Travel offers a solid river cruise experience with value-focused offerings and an emphasis on flexibility. The ships have a classic elegance and the cabins provide a comfortable space for relaxing after a day of exploring. I dined aboard the MS William Wordsworth and the experience was enjoyable, though not as extravagant as some of the other options. Riviera is often chosen for its solid affordability and great options for those who want a comfortable river cruise without the higher-end price tag and are looking for a more relaxed, no-frills experience.
Avalon Waterways offers a refined yet approachable cruising experience. During my time aboard the Avalon Passion, I particularly appreciated the thoughtful touches, like the beds facing the French balconies, allowing for panoramic views of the river. Avalon also offers a unique Comfort Collection mattress where you can adjust the firmness to your liking—very soft, soft, firm, or very firm—ensuring a great night’s rest. In addition to family-friendly amenities, Avalon is known for their Active & Discovery cruises. These cruises offer more time in port, visiting unique cities, and feature excursions that go beyond the typical tourist attractions, like hiking, biking, and cultural immersion. Avalon’s family-friendly atmosphere is also reflected in its many onboard activities, such as cooking classes, bike tours, and family-oriented excursions. This makes it an excellent choice for families, but also for couples or friends who want to combine a comfortable cruise with active exploration.
AmaWaterways offers a welcoming atmosphere for families and active travelers alike, with well-designed staterooms and thoughtful amenities. While touring AmaSonata, I enjoyed a fantastic meal onboard, which reinforced their reputation for excellent dining. Their ships feature classic balconies, adding to the comfort of the accommodations. AmaWaterways also stands out for its enriching shore excursions, with options that cater to a variety of interests—including cultural experiences, outdoor adventures, and active explorations like biking and hiking. Whether you're traveling as a family or simply looking for a more immersive experience, AmaWaterways delivers a well-rounded river cruise.
AMADEUS River Cruises offers a more boutique and personalized cruising experience. While AMADEUS does not offer family suites, it’s still a great option for families with kids, with excursions and activities designed to keep younger travelers entertained. The smaller, more intimate ships offer a peaceful, quieter experience, which suits not only families but also solo travelers and couples looking for a more serene environment. The service is exemplary, with a focus on creating a relaxing and personalized experience. It’s the perfect choice for those who want to escape the bustle of larger cruise lines while still having access to family-friendly excursions and a laid-back cruise experience.
