Panama Canal
Panama Canal Sailing:

A Bucket List Journey with Virgin Voyages

Some trips are about the destination, and some are about the journey itself. A Panama Canal sailing falls firmly into the second category, blending relaxation, culture, and one of the most fascinating engineering feats in the world. Paired with Virgin Voyages, this itinerary becomes something even more special, combining a laid-back, adults-only atmosphere with standout dining, entertainment, and thoughtfully curated experiences both onboard and ashore.

Life Onboard
The Virgin Voyages Experience

From the moment we stepped onboard, the energy felt exactly right. We headed straight to the pool deck on embarkation day and grabbed a spot early, which ended up being one of the best decisions of the trip. What started as a quiet afternoon quickly turned into a lively sail away party with free-flowing bubbles and a great atmosphere, setting the tone for what was to come.

Life onboard settled into an easy and enjoyable rhythm. Mornings were slow and relaxed, afternoons were often spent by the pool or exploring different areas of the ship, and evenings revolved around dining and entertainment that consistently delivered. Pink Agave quickly became our favorite restaurant, with bold flavors and a vibrant setting, while Gunbae stood out for its interactive and social dining experience. The Test Kitchen offered something completely different, leaning into a more experimental style that made dinner feel like an event rather than just a meal. Entertainment is where Virgin really shines, with shows like Duel Reality feeling more like a full production than a typical cruise performance, and a variety of themed parties and live performances creating an atmosphere that always felt fun without ever being overwhelming.

When it comes to cabins, there are a couple of things worth keeping in mind. Deck 14 sits directly below the Galley and other public spaces, and noise can carry more than you might expect, so it’s one I would personally avoid. Cabin location also matters, as rooms all the way forward or aft can differ in size and layout from the standard mid-ship cabins. Virgin’s crew was incredibly accommodating and helped relocate us from a louder Deck 14 cabin to a much quieter one on Deck 10, which made a noticeable difference in our overall experience, even though the aft cabin we moved to was slightly smaller.

Pro Tip:

As soon as you board, head straight to the pool deck to grab a good spot—it fills in quickly once sail away gets going.

Cartagena, Colombia

Cartagena is one of those ports that feels vibrant the moment you step off the ship, and even the port area itself is an experience. It’s almost like a small wildlife sanctuary, with parrots, peacocks, turtles, flamingos, and even anteaters roaming around. We spent time feeding the parrots and peacocks, and at one point had one perched on my shoulder while another confidently claimed Blake’s head. Some were incredibly friendly while others clearly had their boundaries, which made the whole experience even more entertaining.

After a short guided tour in the morning, we headed back out on our own and found a local tapas spot that ended up being one of the highlights of the day. Cartagena is a place where mixing a bit of structure with time to explore independently really pays off, allowing you to experience both the history and the energy of the city in a more personal way.

Colón, Panama & The Agua Clara Locks

Our stop in Colón offered a different perspective on the canal, and while the excursion leaned more toward a scenic walk than the hike we were expecting, the views from the top overlooking the canal and surrounding landscape made it worthwhile. As enthusiastic hikers, we would have loved something a bit more challenging, but it was still a great opportunity to take in the scale of the area.

We also had the chance to see the Agua Clara Locks, part of the Panama Canal’s expanded system. Opened in 2016, these locks were designed to accommodate larger Neo-Panamax ships and use an innovative water-saving system that recycles a significant portion of the water used during each transit. Seeing the locks from land before experiencing them by ship added a new level of appreciation for how the entire system operates.

Transiting the Panama Canal

This is the moment the entire journey builds toward, and it absolutely delivers. We were up early as the ship approached the locks, with commentary throughout the day explaining what was happening in real time, which made the experience even more engaging.

A canal pilot boards the ship to guide the transit, and while tugboats assist with positioning, the ship remains under its own power as it moves through the locks. Each chamber takes roughly 8 to 10 minutes to fill and raise or lower the ship, and watching that process happen up close is fascinating. What’s most striking is just how precisely everything operates, especially seeing how little space there is on either side of the ship as it moves through. It’s one of those experiences that’s hard to fully grasp until you see it in person, and it ends up being both incredibly impressive and surprisingly calming at the same time.

Fun Fact

The Panama Canal generates billions of dollars annually for Panama and costs ships well over $100,000 per transit depending on size

Puntarenas, Costa Rica

Costa Rica is known for its lush landscapes and incredible wildlife, and while our scheduled excursion didn’t quite capture that in the way we had hoped, it gave us a valuable perspective on how to approach this port. Sometimes the best experiences come from stepping a little outside the structured options.

Friends we met onboard, Jim and Michelle, chose to connect with a local guide right off the ship, and their experience sounded incredible. They joined a small group in a comfortable van, explored suspension bridges through the rainforest, and then took a boat ride along a crocodile-filled river where they saw dozens of crocodiles up close, with their guide even feeding them. It looked a little wild, but also like the kind of unforgettable experience you travel for. They wrapped up the day at a local eatery with tapas and drinks, and it was easily a 10 out of 10 experience for them. Puntarenas is definitely a place where going local can elevate the experience in a big way.

Guatemala: Extending the Adventure

Extending this trip into Guatemala turned out to be one of the most memorable parts of the entire journey. We made our way to Pacaya Volcano for a 2.5-hour hike, and while it’s rated as hard, the views make every step worth it. The landscape feels raw and dramatic, with an active volcano venting smoke and sweeping views across the region. On a clear day you can even see all the way to the ocean, though a bit of haze is common.

Getting around Guatemala City requires some planning, as traffic can be significant and what looks like a short distance on a map can take much longer than expected. Ubers are widely available and very affordable, making them the easiest way to get around, but it’s important to build in extra time, especially when heading to the airport. We stayed at Barceló Guatemala City, which offered a comfortable and spacious stay with great amenities and an easy base for exploring.

Final Thoughts

A Panama Canal sailing with Virgin Voyages is less about rushing from port to port and more about enjoying the journey itself. It offers the ease of unpacking once, an onboard experience that stands out in the cruise industry, and the opportunity to witness one of the world’s most remarkable engineering achievements up close.

When you combine that with vibrant destinations like Cartagena, the wildlife of Costa Rica, and the adventure of Guatemala, it becomes a trip that blends relaxation, culture, and exploration in a way that feels seamless and memorable. It’s the kind of journey that appeals to travelers who want something a little different, and when done right, it’s an experience that truly stands out.
