Nestled on Mexico’s stunning Pacific coastline, Puerto Vallarta offers a vibrant mix of natural wonders and relaxation. My trip was filled with unforgettable moments, from breathtaking whale encounters to leisurely days at a family-friendly resort.
Don’t expect getting to Puerto Vallarta to be the smoothest experience. Upon arrival, many planes deplane on the tarmac, requiring a bus ride to the terminal—a process that’s thankfully quicker than expected but still less than ideal. The initial passport check, handled by machines, was straightforward, though this could depend on your timing. However, baggage claim was a different story, with numerous carousels and a long backtracking line to put luggage through a scanner.
The customs declaration form, which the airline is supposed to hand out, was only distributed at baggage claim and poorly communicated. Travelers with carry-ons only (like me) easily missed it, and pens to fill out the form were nowhere to be found—a small but annoying oversight.
Though the arrival experience left much to be desired, it didn’t dampen my excitement for what lay ahead. Puerto Vallarta quickly made up for its less-than-perfect airport with the vibrant charm and beauty that awaited just beyond the terminal doors.
Weirdest tip ever, I know
Puerto Vallarta is a dream destination for whale watching, especially from December through March, when sightings are almost guaranteed. These months mark the humpback whales' migration to Banderas Bay, where they mate, give birth, and nurse their calves. Within minutes of setting out on our excursion, we spotted whales! The groups ranged from a mother and her playful baby to as many as six adults engaged in captivating mating displays. The males competed for the females’ attention, chasing and leaping through the water in dramatic fashion.
Watching the whales breach, flap their tails and fins, or simply glide through the sparkling ocean was mesmerizing. At one point, our guide lowered a hydrophone into the water, allowing us to hear the males’ songs. Males can frequently be found below water, perpendicular to the ocean floor, singing to attract potential mates and broadcast their song as effectively as possible with their position in the water.
Whale watching in Puerto Vallarta isn’t just about the thrill of spotting these majestic creatures—it’s a profound connection to nature that stays with you. Beyond the excursion, we were delighted to spot whales regularly from the rooftop sunset bar at our resort. Sipping cocktails while watching these majestic animals play in the distance was a magical way to end each day. Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or a first-time visitor, this experience alone makes Puerto Vallarta worth the trip.
The resort we stayed at was a perfect blend of relaxation and activity, catering to both families and couples. The infinity pool, a true centerpiece, offered something for everyone—lively moments by the swim-up bar and quieter corners to unwind. Families with young children gravitated toward the shallow kids’ pool, adjacent to a charming playground and the kids’ club, creating an inviting space for little ones to play while parents relaxed nearby.
The beach, though featuring darker sand rather than the powdery white many envision, was serene and spacious, with plenty of loungers to soak up the sun. While the water wasn’t completely calm, it was swimmable and ideal for spotting whales between November and March or catching some waves for surfing enthusiasts. Watching the horizon at sunset often brought glimpses of whales, a magical bonus of the location.
Dining options were a highlight, especially the Mexican restaurant, which delivered delicious meals with a fun, interactive twist. The breakfast buffet was well-stocked with all the staples you’d expect. Entertainment struck a balance between lively and unobtrusive, offering everything from live music and karaoke to Latin dance nights and a late-night disco. The resort even had a large theater for evening shows.
For active guests, yoga, Zumba, and beach volleyball were popular, and the resort’s complimentary two-hour guided hike up a nearby mountain was a unique, invigorating experience for those ready for a challenge.
The rooms were spacious and thoughtfully designed, with comfortable beds, balconies, and effective air conditioning. Opting for oceanfront or beachfront rooms added a touch of luxury with spectacular views, though the bathrooms and water pressure left room for improvement.
Male humpback whales in Puerto Vallarta sing underwater songs to attract mates! On a whale-watching tour, you might even get to hear their melodies through a hydrophone.
