Valiant Lady Celebration Voyage
Setting Sail aboard the Valiant Lady

Embark on a journey with me as I recount my recent experience aboard the Valiant Lady on a girl’s trip. As a seasoned travel agent with a love for cruising, I’m excited to share both the highs and the hiccups of this unique voyage. Whether you’re a first-time cruiser or a seasoned sailor, my insights will help you navigate your next adventure with confidence.

It was smooth sailing from the start, with boarding an absolute breeze. My cabin mate and I were the last of my group to arrive, but the whole crew reported excellent experiences with boarding. While my bag took a bit longer to arrive, the attentive service from my housekeeper more than made up for it. Her prompt introduction and readiness to assist set a positive tone right from the start.

While the room felt a bit snug compared to my recent stay on the Norwegian Viva, we were both able to find adequate space to settle in for the extended weekend. The split bed configuration, which is a L-shape unique to Virgin Voyages, worked fine, and the beds themselves were quite comfortable. The bathroom was a tight squeeze, but the water pressure and rainfall shower head were top-notch.

Pro Tip for Split Beds:

Be mindful when selecting your bed; the direction can make a difference with the ship’s movement

Cruise Highlights: Daily Adventures Aboard the Valiant Lady

We started our voyage in style, lounging by the pool and soaking up the vibrant energy as the ship set sail. The sail-away party by the main pool was a blast, with lively music and a festive crowd setting the tone for the week ahead.

Our first sea day offered the perfect chance to dive into the ship’s fitness scene. The gym, although compact, was well-designed with cardio and strength equipment positioned to maximize ocean views. Daily spin and HIIT classes are included in your fare, with the 8am spin class being a popular spot to possibly catch a glimpse of Richard Branson himself. For outdoor fitness, the running track encircling the top deck provided a refreshing way to get your steps in, while The Perch—a serene spot one level up—was ideal for morning yoga and meditation sessions. If you prefer something more dynamic, the outdoor fitness equipment and boxing setup won’t disappoint, and pickleball enthusiasts will love the tournaments held on the basketball court.

Scarlet Night was an evening to remember. We began by heading to the glam-bar for face glitter—definitely arrive right on time as this activity gets busy! The night was highlighted by a spectacular performance from Boy George, electrifying the pool deck with his energy. Sailors danced, and some even took a plunge into the pool, making for a lively scene. The party then moved to The Manor, where we enjoyed vibrant music, dancing, and fantastic cocktails, keeping the celebration going well into the night.

Our next sea day was a more relaxed affair. We spent our time lounging by the pool before moving to the top deck for some much-needed shade. That evening, some of the group caught a captivating show, while others enjoyed a quiet nightcap on the sunbeds at the back of the ship.

Port Highlights: Exploring New Shores

Our first port of call was Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic. While Tasha and I were just in Punta Cana earlier this year, it was refreshing to explore a different side of the country. We embarked on a catamaran and snorkeling excursion, which, while modest in luxury, offered fantastic snorkeling opportunities and an engaging crew who shared a lot of information about the country. Back at the port, we found plenty of bars, shops and activities, making it a delightful spot to explore if you choose to stay on land.

Next, we arrived in Bimini, where we decided to rent a golf cart to navigate the island. While it was fun to explore, the rental cost of $80-100 felt a bit steep, and the island’s dining options were on the pricier side. However, the highlight of Bimini was the private beach club, which was easily accessible via Virgin’s trams. The beach club featured a stunning beach, expansive pools, energetic entertainment, and an array of food and drinks, making it the perfect place to relax and soak up the sun.

Fun Fact:

The Dominican Republic is the world’s largest producer of premium cigars, and while the tobacco in a Cuban cigar may be from Cuba, the majority of them are rolled in the Dominican Republic

Ship Eats: A Culinary Journey

Dining aboard the Valiant Lady offered a range of experiences, each with its own unique flavor and atmosphere. We began our culinary journey with a casual dinner at Razzle Dazzle, known for its inventive vegetable-forward dishes. It was a perfect introduction to the week. The bottomless hibiscus and mint mimosas at breakfast were a standout, and the Impossible sausage proved that plant-based options can be just as satisfying as traditional meat dishes. The Galley became a go-to spot for casual dining, offering most of the breakfast and lunch options. The sushi boxes available for lunch quickly became a group favorite, praised for their freshness and convenience.

We also experienced Gunbae, the Korean BBQ restaurant. While the high energy and noise level might be overwhelming for some, it’s a great choice for an enthusiastic group. The key to enhancing the flavors was the selection of sauces provided, which were crucial to the experience. I highly recommend ordering a bottle of sake – and be sure to save some to take by Sip, where the mixologists can craft a delightful cocktail with it. Pink Agave offered a vibrant selection of small, medium, a large plates, with the Mexican street corn standing out as a highlight. The dishes were flavorful, although even the large plates were rather small. We closed our trip off with one final group dinner at The Wake, where we indulged in an impressive seafood tower and well-prepared steaks.

Overall, the food experience aboard the Valiant Lady was varied and generally enjoyable, though some dishes would have benefited from a touch more seasoning. The variety of dining options catered to different tastes and preferences, contributing to a diverse culinary journey throughout the cruise.
